Battery chemistry
LiFePO4 (LFP) cells last far longer than standard lithium-ion — often thousands of charge cycles versus a few hundred — and run cooler, which matters for a unit that may sit in a hot garage. Most serious home-backup units have moved to LFP for this reason.
Continuous output vs. surge rating
The continuous wattage rating tells you what it can run steadily; the surge rating only matters for the brief spike when a motor-driven appliance like a fridge or pump switches on, typically for a few seconds. Don't assume the surge number is available for sustained heavy loads.
Real-world solar performance
Rated solar panel wattage is measured under ideal, direct, unobstructed sun. Realistic output — with any cloud cover, imperfect angle, or partial shade — often lands 30-40% below the rated figure, which meaningfully changes how long a full solar recharge actually takes.
UPS switchover
If you want the unit to automatically take over when grid power drops rather than manually plugging things in after the fact, confirm it has a UPS mode and check the switchover time — under 30 milliseconds is fast enough that most electronics won't interrupt.
Weight and portability
Larger-capacity units commonly weigh 60-100+ lbs. Built-in wheels and a handle make a real difference if you ever need to move it, and it's worth checking that before buying rather than after it arrives.
