Sustained throughput vs. advertised speed

A hub advertised for 10Gbps data transfer can still throttle after a few minutes of sustained use if thermal management is poor. This matters most for anyone regularly copying large video or photo files, less so for occasional document transfers.

Display output specifics

Check not just "supports 4K" but at what refresh rate, and whether that requires DisplayPort Alt Mode support on your specific laptop. Some hubs only hit 4K at 30Hz, which feels noticeably worse for general use than 4K at 60Hz.

Power delivery pass-through

Most hubs include a pass-through charging port so you are not sacrificing your laptop's only USB-C port for charging. Confirm the pass-through wattage is enough for your laptop — many hubs cap at 60W or 65W, which undercharges higher-powered laptops during heavy use.

Heat and throttling
