What actually matters when buying a wall charger
Wattage numbers on the box only tell part of the story. Here is what determines whether a charger is genuinely useful for your setup.
Shared vs. per-port wattage
A charger rated "45W" with two ports rarely delivers 45W to each port simultaneously. Most split the total — commonly an asymmetric allocation like 25W to one port and 20W to the other — so check whether the listing specifies per-port behavior before assuming both devices charge at full speed at once.
GaN vs. traditional silicon
GaN chargers run cooler and pack more wattage into a smaller shell than older silicon-based designs, which is why most higher-wattage chargers releasing today use it. It is not a marketing gimmick — the size and heat difference is noticeable in daily use, especially for anything carried in a bag.
Matching wattage to your actual devices
A 45W charger comfortably fast-charges a phone and tablet, and can charge a MacBook Air, but larger laptops like a 16-inch MacBook Pro or many gaming ultrabooks want 96W or more and will charge slowly, or only while asleep, on an underpowered charger. Check your laptop's stock charger wattage before assuming a compact GaN charger is a drop-in replacement.
Included cables
Some chargers ship with no cable at all, others include a basic one, and a few bundle genuinely good braided cables in useful lengths. Since a fast charger is only as good as the cable feeding it, factor cable quality into the price comparison rather than judging the charger in isolation.
Portability details
Foldable prongs, rounded edges, and low weight matter far more once a charger leaves the desk. If it is going in a bag daily, these small details affect daily usability more than an extra few watts of output.
