Choosing a mechanical keyboard that fits how you actually type
Switch type
Linear switches (smooth, no bump) suit fast typists and gamers who want consistent actuation. Tactile switches add a bump you can feel without bottoming out, which many people find reduces typos over long sessions. Clicky switches add an audible click on top of the tactile bump — great at home, a liability in a shared office.
Hot-swappable sockets
A hot-swappable PCB lets you change switches without soldering, which matters if you are not sure which switch feel you will prefer, or if you want to experiment later. It is a small cost premium that adds a lot of long-term flexibility.
Layout and size
Full-size boards keep the numpad but take up more desk space. Tenkeyless (TKL) removes the numpad for a more centered mouse position. 60% and 65% layouts go further, dropping function rows and arrow keys, which some users love for desk space and others find frustrating for shortcuts.
Build quality and stabilizers
Case material affects both sound and rigidity — aluminum cases feel and sound noticeably different from plastic ones. Stabilizers on the larger keys (space bar, shift, enter) are a common failure point where cheaper boards produce a rattly or inconsistent sound even with good switches.
Connectivity
Wired connections eliminate input lag concerns entirely. Bluetooth and 2.4GHz wireless have improved enormously, but if you play competitive games, a wired connection or a keyboard with a dedicated low-latency wireless mode is still the safer choice.
